Is 2027 the 96th or 97th Sheridan WYO Rodeo?

The 2027 event is officially the 97th Sheridan WYO Rodeo — that's the organizing committee's own count — but you will see different numbers in print, and there's a good historical reason why.

The rodeo was founded in 1931, when a group of Sheridan citizens put up a $15,000 purse to draw professional contestants and promote the town. Count the years from 1931 to 2027 inclusive and you get 97 — the number the Sheridan WYO Rodeo organization uses. By that same count, 2026 was the 96th.

Meanwhile, Sheridan County Travel & Tourism has described 2026 as the rodeo's "95th year." Neither source is simply wrong; they're counting different things. The rodeo hasn't run every year since 1931, and its own history is wonderfully untidy:

    • · 1942–1943: not held. The board found it impossible to stage the event during World War II.
    • · 1944–1951: held, but under a different name — the Bots Sots Stampede, an amateur "working cowboy" format. The community voted to restore the Sheridan-Wyo-Rodeo name in 1951.
    • · 2020: cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the rodeo returned in 2021, the organization celebrated it as the 90th anniversary.

So the arithmetic depends on your method. Count anniversary-style from the 1931 founding and 2027 is the 97th. Subtract the dark years, or start the clock at a different point in the Bots Sots era, and you land on a smaller number.

Our position: we use the organizing committee's numbering, because it's their rodeo. 2027 is the 97th Sheridan WYO Rodeo and World Championship Indian Relay, confirmed for July 14–17, 2027.

One more wrinkle for the history-minded: even 1931 wasn't really the beginning. The PK Rodeo, staged on the PK Ranch in 1928 and 1929, drew crowds of nearly 20,000 and proved Sheridan would turn out for rodeo — two years before the WYO existed. If you're inclined to argue numbering at the Mint Bar during rodeo week, you now have everything you need.
