Where to stay for the Bighorn Trail Run, close to the finish

Stay in Dayton or Ranchester if you can. All four distances finish at Scott Bicentennial Park in Dayton[1], a town of 822[22]. Visit Sheridan's lodging list shows only a few places to stay in Dayton and Ranchester, and 19 hotels and motels in Sheridan[21], about 16 miles away in a straight line[22][45]. Crews do best in a house: a kitchen, a washer for muddy gear, and a dark room to sleep after the 100 runs through the night.

To the 100-mile start, our estimate: Fri June 18, 2027, 9:00 AM, following the 2026 Friday 9 AM start[6]. The race hasn't posted 2027 dates; the Western States qualifier list shows June 2027[15]. Finish window: 35 hours, to Sat 8:00 PM[2].

Why lodging is the hard part

Three things that catch first-time crews

    822people in Dayton, 2020 census[22]

The finish is in a very small town

Every distance ends in Dayton[1]. Visit Sheridan's lodging list shows only a few places to stay in Dayton and Ranchester, and 19 hotels and motels in Sheridan[21], about 16 miles from Dayton in a straight line[22][45]. The race offers gym-floor and parking-lot space at the community center for participants[43].

    35 hrs100-mile time limit[2]

The 100 runs through the night

The 100 starts at 9:00 AM Friday and the finish closes at 8:00 PM Saturday[2]. Sunset is about 9 PM and sunrise about 5:20 AM[23]. Even the 2026 course record, 17:58:03[14], means a finish just before 3 AM Saturday from a 9 AM start. Every 100-miler runs through the night, and so does the crew. Somebody has to sleep in the daytime.

    2.5 hrsDry Fork ↔ Sally's, each way[5]

    Crew points are far apart

Crews meet 100-milers at only a few aid stations[2]. The drive to Sally's Footbridge goes north through Montana and ends on a rough canyon road where high clearance is recommended[5]. Driving Tongue Canyon Road during the race gets your runner disqualified[5].

    The race

Four distances, one finish line in Dayton

Local trail runners started the race in 1993; the 100 was added in 2002[13]. It draws runners from all 50 states and eight countries[19].

    Why a house

A crew of four in motel rooms, or one house

Count the rooms first. Then count what a motel room can't do: wash mud out of a runner's kit[3], cook real food at 2 AM, and stay dark at noon for whoever drove the night shift.

Example rates only, not quotes. Put in the real numbers you're seeing. Your house rate comes from the booking page.

    History

The race, the river and the town at the bottom

    1993

Local trail runners started the race. It grew out of opposition to the proposed Dry Fork hydroelectric project.[13]

    2002

    The 100-mile distance was added[13]. Today it's a Western States qualifier[15].

    1882

Homesteaders met at Henry Baker's store near where the Tongue and Little Tongue rivers meet and named the townsite Dayton.[46]

    1910s

Susan Wissler served as mayor of Dayton, the first woman mayor in Wyoming.[33]

    Tongue

The Tongue River's name comes from the Cheyenne word for "tongue river." It leaves its canyon at Dayton.[34]

    2026

Bo Shelby ran 17:58:03[14], the first sub-18-hour Bighorn 100[18].

We call it the Footbridge Hours: the stretch between watching your runner cross Sally's Footbridge at mile 30 and seeing them cross it again at mile 66.‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ They go up to Jaws and back. Questions

    Bighorn Trail Run lodging questions

Where should I stay for the Bighorn Trail Run?
As close to Dayton as you can. All four distances finish at Scott Bicentennial Park in Dayton [1], and the 100 starts about 3.5 miles from Scott Park, off Tongue Canyon Road [44]. Visit Sheridan's lodging list shows only a few places to stay in Dayton and Ranchester and 19 hotels and motels in Sheridan [21], about 16 miles from Dayton in a straight line [22][45]. Crews often want a house with a kitchen and a washer.
When is the 2027 Bighorn Trail Run?
The race hasn't posted 2027 dates. The Western States qualifier list shows June 2027 [15]. In 2026 the 100 started Friday, June 19 at 9 AM and the other distances ran Saturday, June 20 [6].
    When does registration open?
The race site says October 15 for the 100 and 52 [17]. In the last cycle the 18, 32 and 52 opened January 5, 2026 [16]. Entries are on ItsYourRace and can't be transferred [16].
    Where is the finish line?
Scott Bicentennial Park on 2nd Avenue in Dayton, at about 3,970 feet [2][3]. The finish closes at 8 PM Saturday for every distance [2].
Can crews drive to every aid station?
No. For the 100, crews can reach Dry Fork Ridge, Sally's Footbridge and Jaws Trailhead [2]. Driving Tongue Canyon Road during the race disqualifies your runner [5].
Do I need a high-clearance vehicle to crew?
For Sally's Footbridge, yes. The last stretch is a rough, primitive canyon road, and the race recommends high clearance [5]. The race's travel page suggests 4WD [43].
How long does the 100 take?
The limit is 35 hours, from 9 AM Friday to 8 PM Saturday [2]. The course record is 17:58:03, set by Bo Shelby in 2026 [14].
Where do I pick up my packet and drop bags?
In 2026 it was the Sheridan Inn, 856 Broadway in Sheridan: Thursday noon to 6 PM for all packets and 100-mile bags, Friday noon to 6 PM for 52 and 32 bags [6]. Check the 2027 schedule when it posts.
How do runners get to the start?
Race buses. In 2026 the 100-mile buses left Scott Park from 6:45 AM, and the 52, 32 and 18 buses left early Saturday morning [6]. The race doesn't drive you back to a car at the start [44].
    What's the closest airport?
Sheridan County Airport has daily United Express flights to Denver [36]. Billings is about 118 road miles from Dayton [37]; Casper is about 174 [38].
    What's the weather in mid-June?
In Sheridan, June averages a high of about 77°F and a low of about 47°F [45]. The mountain is colder. The race's medical page warns of heat, cold, snow and altitude [24]. Check the NWS forecast for Dayton [25].
    Is it good for kids?
In 2026 there was a kids and family run in Ranchester Saturday morning and a finish-line picnic at Scott Park from noon to 8 PM [6].

    Who's behind this page

Wyo Stays, LLC rents homes in Dayton, Ranchester and Sheridan. We don't put on the Bighorn Trail Run and we aren't part of it. The race, its volunteers, its sponsors and the U.S. Forest Service decide everything about the course, and the race's own site is the final word on dates, rules and cutoffs. No business named here paid us. The Living Room is ours, and we label it where it appears. Found a wrong time or date? Call (307) 763-5449 and we'll correct it.
