From the Wyo Stays team. A working template — adapt to your property and post it for guests.
When something goes wrong, your guests are strangers in an unfamiliar place counting on you to have a plan. A simple, posted emergency plan protects them, your property, and you. Here's the framework.
Post this where guests can find it (welcome book + on-site)
- Emergency contact: your number, plus 911 for true emergencies
- Nearest hospital / urgent care / pharmacy — name, address, distance
- Utility shut-offs: water main, gas, electrical breaker — labeled
- Fire: extinguisher and exit locations; "get out, then call"
- First-aid kit location
Scenario cards (brief, calm instructions)
- Power outage — flashlight/lantern location, what to check, your number, what to expect
- Winter storm / extreme cold — heat guidance, "if a pipe freezes" steps, road/alert info
- Water leak — where the shut-off is, call immediately
- Medical — nearest care + 911
- Fire — evacuate first, then call
- Wildfire (seasonal) — evacuation route + alerts (see Wildfire-Season Readiness)
Your side of the plan (owner/manager)
- A stocked on-site emergency kit (flashlight, batteries, first aid, water)
- Detectors tested; extinguishers current
- A way to reach current and upcoming guests fast if conditions change
- Vendor emergency numbers on hand (plumber, electrician — see Trusted Vendor List)
- Insurance claim contacts ready (see The STR Insurance Guide)
Why it matters
Most emergencies become minor when there's a plan and a reachable human — and become disasters and one-star reviews when there isn't. A one-page plan is cheap insurance.
