Airbnb's AirCover and Vrbo's protections are genuinely useful. They are also widely misunderstood as "insurance." They aren't a substitute for your own policy — and betting your asset on that misunderstanding is a costly mistake.
What platform protection is good at
- Baseline liability and damage backstop on platform bookings, with meaningful limits.
- Fast, in-app claims for guest-caused damage.
- Guest verification and reservation screening built into the booking flow.
- Zero extra cost on the bookings it covers.
For a casual host taking the occasional Airbnb reservation, it's a real safety net.
Where it leaves you exposed
It's secondary and conditional. Platform coverage is designed to sit behind your own insurance and comes with terms, exclusions, and claim deadlines. It's a backstop, not a foundation.
It usually doesn't touch your direct bookings. This is the big one. The whole point of a smart strategy is shifting bookings direct for the margin — and platform protection generally doesn't apply to bookings made off-platform. The more successful your direct-booking engine, the less of your business platform coverage protects.
It's not built for everything a business faces. Loss of rental income, certain property perils, and the full scope of a serious liability claim can fall outside what a platform program is meant to handle.
Coverage terms change at the platform's discretion — not something to build your risk plan around.
The right mental model
Think of it like a credit card's purchase protection. Nice to have. Not a reason to skip real insurance.
- Commercial STR policy = your foundation — liability, property, business income, on every channel.
- AirCover/Vrbo protection = a bonus layer on top, for the platform bookings it happens to cover.
Carry both. Rely on the policy.
The one-question test
Ask yourself: "If a guest who booked directly on my website got hurt tomorrow, what covers me?" If the honest answer is "AirCover" — you have a gap to close today. (See The STR Insurance Guide.)
Covered on every channel
The properties we manage are insured to apply across direct and OTA bookings alike — because as we drive nearly half our nights direct, platform coverage simply wouldn't be enough.
