Where Sheridan Wins
Price. This isn't subtle. A 3-bedroom vacation rental in Sheridan runs $180–$320/night. The equivalent in Jackson Hole is $600–$1,200. Your family of six can do a full week in Sheridan for what a long weekend costs in Jackson.
Authenticity. Sheridan is a working town. The ranchers at The Mint Bar aren't costumes. The rodeo isn't staged for tourists — it's been running since 1931 and the competitors are real professionals. Main Street has zero chain restaurants. Jackson's Town Square still has the elk antler arches, but the storefronts are increasingly occupied by luxury brands.
Uncrowded access. Tongue River Canyon on a Saturday morning? Maybe six other hikers. The Big Horn Polo Club on Sunday? A hundred people spread across acres of lawn. Try hiking Cascade Canyon in the Tetons on a July Saturday — you'll wait in line for the trailhead.
Fly fishing. Both areas have world-class trout water. The difference is company. Sheridan's rivers — the Tongue, Piney Creek, the Bighorn tributaries — are genuinely uncrowded. You can fish all day and see one other person.
Where Jackson Hole Wins
Yellowstone and Grand Teton proximity. Jackson is 1.5 hours from Yellowstone's north entrance and directly adjacent to Grand Teton National Park. If the national parks are your primary reason for visiting Wyoming, Jackson is the practical choice. Sheridan is 3.5–4 hours from Yellowstone — doable as a day trip but not ideal as a daily base.
Airport access. Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) has direct flights from major hubs. Sheridan County Airport is small — most visitors fly into Billings, Montana (2 hours) or connect through Denver. Jackson is simply easier to reach by air.
Wildlife density. The Teton ecosystem produces extraordinary wildlife viewing — bison herds, grizzly bears, moose in willows. Sheridan has elk, deer, and antelope in abundance, but the dramatic megafauna sightings are more reliably found in the Teton/Yellowstone corridor.

If you want national parks, dramatic Teton scenery, and don't mind paying a premium — Jackson Hole is excellent. If you want authentic Western culture, uncrowded outdoor access, world-class fishing, and to stretch your budget three times further — Sheridan is the better trip.
