Unwind, Connect and Dive into Pacific Islander Culture with Local Nakamal's Traditional Kava Ceremonies

In the islands of the Pacific,
Where palm trees sway and the sea is mystic,
There's a drink that holds a special place,
A drink that brings serenity and grace.

Kava, the drink of the ancestors,
A symbol of peace and cultural dancers,
Mixed with water, pounded with care,
A ritual to be shared with friends and aware.

At Local Nakamal, we honor the past,
And welcome you to this tradition that will last,
Come, join us in a kava ceremony,
And connect with culture, history and energy.

Sip the kava, feel the calm,
Leave stress and worries behind,
Together we'll share stories and songs,
And find a sense of peace and mind.

Experience the beauty and presence of kava,
At Local Nakamal, where tradition is alive,
Unwind, connect and dive into culture,
And let the kava ceremony thrive.

At Local Nakama l, we believe that the traditional process of making kava is not only an essential part of Pacific Islander culture, but also a beautiful and meditative experience. Kava, also known as 'yaqona' in Fijian or 'sakau' in Pohnpeian, is a beverage made from the root of the kava plant, which is native to the South Pacific. The kava plant has been used for centuries by islanders for its calming and relaxing properties.

The traditional process of making kava is a ceremony that brings people together in a relaxed and respectful atmosphere. It is an opportunity to connect with others and to take a break from the fast-paced modern world. The ceremony usually starts with a prayer or a song to honor the kava plant and to thank the ancestors for their guidance.

The process of making kava involves pounding or grinding the kava root into a fine powder, which is then mixed with water in a large bowl. The mixture is then strained and served in a coconut shell or other traditional vessel. The kava is consumed in one or two gulps, and the ceremony ends with a round of speeches, stories or songs.

Making kava the traditional way is not only a cultural experience, but it is also a meditative process that allows you to connect with your inner self and the nature around you. The process of pounding and straining the kava root is a form of mindfulness practice that helps to release stress and tension. It is an opportunity to slow down, to breathe and to be present in the moment.

Making kava the traditional way is a simple and meditative process that anyone can enjoy.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make kava the traditional way, similar to the process we use at Local Nakamal:

Step 1: Obtain the necessary supplies. You will need kava root powder, a strainer bag or cheesecloth, a large mixing bowl, warm (not hot! 100-120 degrees is about perfect) water, and (optional) a wooden or plastic muddler or pestle.

Step 2: Measure out the desired amount of kava root powder according to the number of servings needed.

Step 3: Place the strainer bag or cheesecloth in the large mixing bowl.

Step 4: Slowly add the kava root powder to the strainer bag or cheesecloth, making sure to evenly distribute the powder.

Step 5: Slowly pour the water over the kava root powder in the strainer bag or cheesecloth.

Step 6: Using the wooden or plastic muddler or pestle,(or kneading with your hands, become one with the kava!) gently pound and squeeze the kava root powder in the strainer bag or cheesecloth for 5-10 minutes to release the kavalactones (the active compounds in kava).

Step 7: Remove the strainer bag or cheesecloth from the bowl and squeeze out any remaining liquid. Discard the solids and pour the liquid kava into a serving bowl or cups. ( you can also do a second rinse, separately to create a second wash... "dirt water")

Step 8: Serve the kava immediately and enjoy with friends in a traditional kava ceremony, following Pacific Islander customs.

Step 9: Clean the equipment with clean water, and dry thoroughly before storing.

Step 10: If making a lot that won't all be enjoyed in one sitting, it a great practice to record the date, type of kava root used, and and any specifics in your Kava Journal so you can Kaizen (continuously improve) your way to your favorite brewing methods!

By following these steps, you can make kava the traditional way and enjoy the benefits of this ancient Pacific Islander tradition. At Local Nakamal, we invite you to experience the beauty and presence of traditional kava making and to connect with Pacific Islander culture, along with your inner self!

At our local Wyoming Kava Bar, we believe that the traditional process of making kava is not only an essential part of Pacific Islander culture, but also a valuable tool for living in the present moment and for cultivating a meditative practice.

Living in the present moment is a valuable practice that allows us to be fully engaged in our daily lives, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. It helps us to be more aware of our surroundings and to appreciate the beauty of the world around us. The traditional process of making kava, with its focus on pounding and straining the kava root, is a form of mindfulness practice that helps to release stress and tension. It is an opportunity to slow down, to breathe and to be present in the moment.

Meditation is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries to improve mental and physical well-being. It is a practice that allows us to become more aware of our thoughts and feelings, and to learn how to manage them in a positive way. The traditional process of making kava is a meditative practice that allows us to focus on the present moment and to release stress and tension.
