You're standing in the doorway of a three-bedroom cabin on the west side of Sheridan. The previous guests checked out fifty-three minutes ago. New guests arrive at three. That window — those five hours — is everything. The house is still. Not quiet the way an empty room is quiet — still the way a held breath is still. There's energy in it. The slightly rumpled comforter that hasn't been made wrong, just hasn't been made yet. The coffee cup ring on the kitchen counter that nobody else would notice. The throw pillow on the couch that's three inches to the left of where it belongs. You notice all of it.
