We've been running Wyo Stays since 2020 — managing 40+ properties and having a version of this conversation with thousands of guests. Here's what we actually tell people when they have the time to do it right. Main Street is seven blocks of independent businesses that have survived not because Sheridan has been preserved, but because Sheridan people support what they have. King's Saddlery at 184 N. Main is where the walk should begin and end. Allocate 90 minutes minimum. The saddlery itself is operational — they ship custom saddles to working ranches on six continents. The museum in the back is not on their website and not on TripAdvisor. Ask the person at the counter to let you through. The café atmosphere is relaxed, the baristas know what they're doing. This is the morning stop locals protect. Drive Hwy 14 west toward Dayton. The Tongue River Canyon trailhead is approximately 20 minutes from downtown Sheridan — no sign, on the right side of the highway where the road briefly straightens before a curve. You'll see the other trucks. That's the trailhead. The canyon is 7 miles out-and-back. The walls close in around mile 1.5 in a way that surprises everyone who did the research — the photographs don't communicate how narrow it actually gets. Red and grey limestone, several hundred feet. The river cold enough in August that guests wade in and immediately gasp. Today, take US-14A. Hwy 14 west from Sheridan through Ranchester, then the highway splits at Dayton. Left is US-14, which runs through Tongue River Canyon territory and up into the forest. Right is US-14A, which climbs Medicine Wheel Passage to one of the most significant archaeological sites in North America and the most dramatic views the range produces. The Medicine Wheel at 9,642 feet: a 75-foot stone circle built over 10,000 years, used ceremonially by dozens of Indigenous nations, still actively visited for prayer. The walk from the parking area is 1.5 miles roundtrip on a well-maintained path. No dogs past the lot. Photograph respectfully — some areas are roped. The thing you'll remember is not the wheel itself, which is remarkable, but the silence at altitude, and the Bighorn Basin dropping 7,000 feet to the west in every direction. Road Access Note US-14A above Dayton closes in winter — typically November through May, depending on snowpack. Always check current conditions at wyoroad.info before planning this drive. The forest service road to Medicine Wheel itself may have separate seasonal restrictions. Drive back the way you came. The descent in the other direction. The views change with the angle and the time of day. Stop in Dayton for lunch — a genuine small Wyoming town at the base of the mountain, nothing performed about it. ## Thursday — Story and the South Story, Wyoming is 20 minutes south of Sheridan on Hwy 193. It is not on the way to anywhere, which is why it stays what it is: a mountain village of pines and creeks and a legendary burger. From the Team The Wagon Box Inn in Story serves what some people — including people who have eaten a lot of burgers in a lot of Wyoming towns — consider the best burger in the county. The dining room has been there for decades. The service is exactly what it should be. Go for lunch. Arrive by noon if you can. Piney Creek runs cold through town. Walk it. The Connor Battlefield Historic Site is 5 minutes north on Hwy 193 — a significant piece of 19th century Wyoming history that most visitors skip entirely because it has a modest sign on a highway. The Brinton Museum is 12 minutes south in the village of Big Horn: a world-class Western art collection — Frederic Remington, Charles Russell — in the original 1892 ranch buildings. The new Forrest E. Mars Jr. Building is one of the finest contemporary museum structures we've seen anywhere. Walk through the old buildings first, then the new one. From the Team The half-time divot stomp is not a spectator moment — you're supposed to walk onto the field. Everyone does. It's both functional (the horses' hooves leave divots that could turn an ankle) and the best opportunity to see the field close up and talk to the players, who are usually happy to explain what you've been watching. The crowd is a genuine mix of Sheridan families, working ranchers, retired polo players, and visitors who stumbled in not knowing what to expect. Nobody here is performing. That's why it's worth the 15 minutes. Combine Saturday with the Brinton Museum if you haven't been — it's one mile south on Big Horn Road from the polo grounds. The Cloud Peak Wilderness trailheads off US-16 give you access to one of Wyoming's genuine wilderness areas — 190,000 acres of protected terrain anchored by 13,167-foot Cloud Peak. Day hiking to the wilderness boundary and back is achievable for fit hikers without permits. Most day hikes from US-16 trailheads run 8–12 miles. Pack layers — the weather above 9,000 feet changes faster than any forecast predicts. Altitude Consideration Sheridan sits at 3,700 feet. Cloud Peak Wilderness trailheads are above 8,000 feet.
